A walk around the block

Back home in Provo, we often go for a walk "around the block." There is not much that changes on those walks. Once in awhile we encounter a neighbor but little changes. With the ocean and the beach though, there is something new or different every day.

Good Company

Our daughter Leanna and her 6 and 1/2 month old baby Turk arrived this weekend. His dad, Eser, who is Istanbul couldn't wait to see pictures of Turk in the swimming pool. So here he is. Of course, his mom had to be in the pool with him.

Summer in San Diego

Earl and I were trying to calculate the year when we first brought our family or part of our family to San Diego. We think it was about 18 years ago. As you can probably tell, we have reached that age when something that happened in 1992 seems very recent and not almost 20 years ago.

We both think that the decision to come to San Diego in the summer was an extremely good one. We think that all of our children have come to feel a love for the cool breezes and ocean just as we have. We arrived a week ago and all of our children and their families who can make it this year are planning to drive or fly here so that they can visit the beach and play in the sand.

We have been very fortunate. For the past three summers we have been able to rent a house that has a pool. The water in the pool has been a heavenly 87 degrees Fahrenheit most days. I have no excuse for not swimming some laps and doing some aqua-aerobics.

We arrived on a Friday afternoon and early Saturday morning we drove to the beach and discovered that the parking lot at La Jolla Shores is under 're'construction. The cars in the second picture are parking where no cars were allowed to park in the past. This is the spot where the firefighters used to park their trucks when they took their walks/runs on the beach. After years of watching these dedicated men and women work out on the beach, we wondered if they had found a different place to run. We soon discovered that they had just found a more creative place to park. Just outside of the exit gate for the beach parking, two roads converge on the right. A delta is formed where they meet. The San Diego county firefighters have found the perfect spot to park...right in that no parking/driving zone.

This morning a large dump truck was parked in the Firefighters' parking spot. The big red truck with a ladder came down the street and honked at the dump truck. It didn't move. A couple of minutes went by before the fire truck moved up driver to driver for a chat. I can just imagine the firefighter telling the dump truck driver, "You're in my parking spot." A moment later the fire truck was in its 'triangle' and the dump truck was gone.

Reluctant Blogger

In the past few weeks, I have had several people ask me if I am going to do a blog about living in Finland this coming year. I have been very reluctant to start a blog about myself and my life. Do I really want to make a commitment to a computer page? Do I really want to share my thoughts with other people? Do I really want to share photographs of me with other people? Probably not.

I have seen a few blogs that have daily entries that are so long that I have quit looking at them. That is most certainly not what I want to do. I want to keep it short and hopefully somewhat interesting to myself - if no one else. Wish me luck.
